Nearly 80 American and Israeli Activists Detained by Israel in the West Bank During Olive Harvest

Nearly 80 activists engaged in a “protective presence” activity, attempting to protect Palestinian olive harvesters from settler attacks, have been detained by the Israeli military. The group comprised both American and Israeli activists and notably included a large number of American rabbis and New York Democratic House nominee Brad Lander, who is also Jewish. Most (if not all) of the detainees were released by Wednesday night. In official statements, the IDF claimed that harvests in the area required coordination with Israeli authorities, which the farmers did not obtain. Lander rejected this argument, saying “We were on private Palestinian land. We were with the farmers whose land it is. There’s no obligation to coordinate with the Israeli military.”

Two Israeli lawyers who work on similar detention cases described the mass detention as the largest directed at activists in the West Bank in at least a decade. Protective presence activities like the one the activists were engaged in take on a special significance during the increased violence of the olive harvesting season as a means to protect farmers and allow them to conduct their harvests. This arrest also occurred against a backdrop of increasingly strained relations between the United States and Israel, with the beating of American photojournalist Heidi Levine last Friday drawing a strong condemnation from the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee. Ambassador Huckabee is generally regarded as hardline pro-Israel, but he denounced Friday’s attack as a “despicable act of terror”, using terrorism-related language that in the past was almost completely reserved for describing the actions of Palestinian militant groups.

A team from NPR were the only American journalists on-site to witness the mass detentions. Reporter Ruth Sherlock describes the scene, with first drones appearing over the harvesting site, then a build-up of IDF, Israeli security forces, and settlement security, before IDF troops came down and ordered the activists to leave, declaring the area a “closed military zone”. While Sherlock described this kind of eviction as “seemingly normal” during the olive harvest, what came next was unusual, a large bus arrived and took the now detained activists away to be processed.

The reasons for this action could be broad, but it appears likely that this is an attempt by the Israeli government to project power ahead of elections scheduled for October 27th. Polls in this election will close at 10 PM local time, or 3 PM EDT.

Settlers Attack Palestinians, European Diplomats, and an American Journalist in West Bank Over Weekend Amid Olive Harvest

Settler violence in the West Bank this weekend has left several people injured, with at least one victim requiring hospitalization. Military responses to these violent incidents left at least one other hospitalized. The attacks this weekend went beyond the usual Palestinian victims. An American journalist was severely beaten on Friday, and a convoy of diplomats and dignitaries from France, Poland, and Belgium was attacked on Saturday. While ten arrests have been made, actual indictments against settlers for violence in the West Bank are immensely rare, and convictions are rarer still. The Israeli government, especially Prime Minister Netanyahu, has also attempted to downplay and deny the severity of this weekend’s events, likely due to the upcoming Israeli election scheduled for October 27th.

These attacks have occurred against the backdrop of (and sometimes in the context of) the olive harvest season. This approximately one-month long period is incredibly important to the livelihoods of many Palestinians, with as many as 100,000 families relying on the harvest for all or part of their livelihoods and the olives harvested making up a major pillar of Palestinian exports and the Palestinian GDP. This makes the harvest season a flashpoint of violence, as settlers often seek to obstruct the harvest through force, steal the olives for themselves, or destroy Palestinian trees and groves.

It was in this olive harvesting context that the weekend’s first major violent incident occurred. At approximately 8 a.m. IDT on Friday the 16th, settlers dressed in black descended on the village of Khirbet Abu Falah, about 14 miles south of Nablus. The settlers were armed with slingshots, clubs, heavy stones, and at least one firearm. Some olive trees were set on fire while some residents fled, and others skirmished with the settlers in an attempt to defend the olive trees and their fleeing neighbors. While these attacks, skirmishes and related beatings produced casualties among Palestinians, Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was trapped behind the settler line. Levine, 63, was wearing body armor and was clearly tagged as a journalist but was knocked to the ground and severely beaten while prostrate. She was taken to a hospital, where her injuries were recorded as a broken rib and lacerations on her legs, rear end and hip, as well as a serious cut on her left hand, according to her family. New York Times journalists arrived on the scene at approximately 9:30 a.m. when attacks were ongoing, with Israeli military and security forces arriving afterwards. Tear gas was deployed to clear the area, with journalists hearing live gunfire. During the military response, NYT journalists recorded a group of Palestinians sprinting past Israeli soldiers. The soldiers chased one of the men, Abed Aljaber Obied, and shot him in the leg. Mr. Obied was eventually released by the soldiers and transported by an ambulance in stable condition.

The next day, Saturday the 17th, violence occurred near the village of Taybeh, about four miles south of Khirbet Abu Falah. A diplomatic convoy of officials and dignitaries from France, Belgium, and Poland had arrived to observe the olive harvest in that area and to show solidarity with Palestinian residents. Settlers, masked and armed with clubs, arrived and attacked both the harvesters and the convoy, beating a Palestinian teenager and getting into a fight with one of the European dignitaries, a French mayor whose city had just become a “sister city” to Taybeh. Additionally, a window of a Belgian diplomatic vehicle was smashed. Israeli activists opposed to settler violence attempted to reach the site of the attacks that day but were blocked by a roadblock set up by settlers armed with clubs.

While both of these incidents were vigorously condemned by American and European authorities, Prime Minister Netanyahu minimized the events. In response to the attack on the Washington Post journalist his office stated, “The facts surrounding the confrontation near Abu Falah, during which Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was allegedly assaulted, remain unclear and are under investigation.” In response to the attack on European officials, his office said they would “urge caution before drawing conclusions” due to “concerns about a coordinated campaign to smear Israel”.

Israel’s Central Election Committee Bans all Arab Parties for October 27 Election, High Court Petitioned

One week ago, on September 24th, the Central Election Committee used its power to bar both specific figures, such as Arab politician and leader of the Balad party Sami Abu Shehadeh, as well as all organized Arab and Arab-aligned parties (Ra’am and the Joint List, itself an alliance of Hadash, Ta’al, and Balad) from participating in the upcoming October 27 election.

Both the parties and the individuals barred by the Committee have appealed to the Israeli Supreme Court, sitting as the High Court of Justice, to overturn these suspensions as being baseless attempts to disenfranchise Israel’s Arab citizens. While it is widely suspected the High Court will overturn the party suspensions, it is yet unclear whether it will overturn the individual suspensions, with the President of the court recently advising one of the banned politicians (Sami Abu Shehadeh) to discontinue his campaign.

The Central Election Committee is a politically appointed body, and many have said these bans are simply the Committee acting as an arm of the sitting Netanyahu government, but even parties of the opposition that seek to unseat Netanyahu have either been silent on this action or voiced tacit or at times open support for banning Arab parties.

If these bans are allowed to stand, it would leave Israel’s Arab population, approximately 20% of the population, effectively disenfranchised and without suitable representation in the next Knesset.

Pilot stabs fellow pilot on flight to Israel before passengers intervene to stop attack

https://apnews.com/article/israel-saudi-arabia-dubai-emergency-landing-fd1835479898f2f944792913af7cbce6

On September 30th, a plane flying from Dubai to Tel-Aviv was nearly hijacked. One of the pilots began stabbing the other pilot, causing the plane to fall almost 20,000 ft in the air. The pilot being stabbed thwarted his aggressor along with the help of a few Israeli passengers on the plane. The original squawk code transmitted was 7700, meaning a general emergency. Later, the defending pilot, still under attack, transmitted 7500, signaling unlawful interference or hijacking. It is still unclear whether the attacker planned on committing a terrorist attack on Israeli soil or simply planned to crash the plane with the Israelis onboard.

Weekend of violence shakes West Bank, Israeli killed in Yom Kippur Eve shooting

A series of violent and vandalistic incidents have occurred throughout the West Bank between Thursday, September 17th and Sunday, September 20th, leaving Palestinians and an Israeli activist injured, Palestinian property damaged, and one Israeli citizen dead.

On Thursday, settlers attacked families living on the outskirts of the village of Taybeh in the vicinity of Ramallah. Israeli rabbi and left-wing activist Arik Ascherman sustained facial injuries in the attack. Taybeh is one of about a dozen Christian-majority Palestinian villages in the West Bank, and many of its residents are American citizens.

Israeli settlers carried out further attacks on Friday and Saturday in several towns and villages in the West Bank, with some Palestinian responses alleged. In the town Akraba, south of Nablus, Palestinian news agency Wafa reported an 18-year-old woman was injured by shrapnel from settler gunfire on Friday. Earlier that day, a masked settler was documented entering the village of Khirbet-al-Markaz and attacking a Palestinian woman with a club. On land belonging to the Palestinian village of al-Mughayyir, currently occupied by the illegal Metzudat David farm outpost, Israeli settlers reported gunfire directed at them by Palestinians, also on Friday. Al-Mughayyir has been the site of intense violence in recent weeks, with several of the village’s Palestinian residents being killed by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) gunfire after settlers conducted violent raids against homes in the village.

This violence crescendoed on Sunday, the eve of the most holy day on the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur. A group of Israelis were visiting a spring near the settlement of Neve Tzuf, about 8 miles northeast of Ramallah, when a Palestinian gunman opened fire, killing a 36-year-old man. The assailant was wounded by return fire and tracked to a nearby hospital, where he was arrested by Israeli security forces. Prime Minister Netanyahu has ordered increased IDF and Shin Bet (Israeli domestic intelligence) in the area in response to the attack. A funeral for the victim was held Monday night, but unlike some other events where Israelis were killed by Palestinians in the West Bank, violent settler reprisals (known as “price tag attacks”) have not yet materialized.

New Israeli documentary on Gaza War “NAZA” sparks massive backlash inside Israel

In the days since its premiere at the Vence Film Festival on September 10th, a new Israeli documentary on the Gaza War called “NAZA” has seen accusations of antisemitism and blood libels leveled at it by Israeli politicians and officials, with Israel’s culture minister accusing the directors of “treason against the state” and calling for the revocation of the directors’ Israeli citizenship.

While the degree of vitriol may be new, this type of reaction is familiar to directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, two of the four directors of the Oscar-winning 2024 documentary No Other Land. While No Other Land focused on the violence of Israeli settlers and the Israeli military in the West Bank, NAZA focuses on the war in Gaza. The film chronicles the systematic killing of civilians in Gaza and is built around 24 anonymous interviews with Israeli military and intelligence.

Backlash against the film within Israel has been swift and intense. Besides the calls for citizenship revocation and accusations of treason from Culture Minister Miki Zohar, the chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the film was “based on blood libels, deliberate distortions of reality and grave, false accusations against IDF soldiers and commanders”. Military officials added that they would seek potential legal sanctions against those who gave interviews for the film.

Ha’aretz: UAE President informed Israeli PM Netanyahu days before October 7th attacks that Hamas operation was coming. Netanyahu failed to inform Israel’s security services

United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed informed Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in a phone call a week and half before the attacks of October 7th, 2023, that a major operation by Hamas in Gaza was being planned. President bin Zayed conveyed his fear that this attack would lead to major bloodshed and destabilize the region. However, Netanyahu failed to brief any of the key leaders of the IDF and Israeli security apparatus of this warning.

These allegations come from interviews with senior government officials in Israel and the UAE, along with others, conducted for a new book “Hostages: 843 Days of Abandonment”, and this finding has been published for the first time today by the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz. During a highly contentious election season in Israel, at a time where opponents of the sitting Prime Minister promise extensive inquiries into whether Netanyahu was aware of an imminent attack, these allegations are highly serious and the most recent in a series of stories about Netanyahu’s possible negligence prior to October 7th.

Event 9/15

From Apartheid to DemocracyA Blueprint for Peace in Israel-Palestine
Middle East Policy Forum9/15/2026 | 2:00 – 3:15pm
The Middle East Policy Forum is pleased to host Michael Omer-Man and Sarah Leah Whitson, authors of From Apartheid to Democracy: A Blueprint for Israel-Palestine. A decisive break from the failed Oslo Accords, From Apartheid to Democracy outlines an innovative plan to create the foundations for peace and self-determination in Israel-Palestine. The research and advocacy organization DAWN is co-sponsoring the event.  The authors write that the illusion of a two-state solution under the auspices of the Oslo Accords has allowed Israel to maintain a one-state reality of permanent occupation and apartheid. Michael Omer-Man and Sarah Leah Whitson challenge this approach, presenting a road map to create a rights-respecting regime for everyone now living under Israeli control. Only once basic safety and legal equality are assured can Jewish Israelis and Palestinians determine their futures—in one, two, or more states if they choose—through an inclusive, democratic process. Breaking with the failures of the past, the plan presented here makes clear that ongoing violations of basic human rights must end before issues of governance can be equitably addressed.  All are invited to hear from authors Michael Omer-Man and Sarah Leah Whitson in this event moderated by Elliott School Professor Nathan Brown. This event is open to the general public and media. For those who are interested in purchasing From Apartheid to Democracy: A Blueprint for Israel-Palestine, copies will be available for sale at the event.
