There are currently plans to build a 9,000 home neighborhood within the Jerusalem Municipality near a currently defunct airport called Jerusalem International (or Atarot/Kalandiya) Airport. Palestinian leadership opposes this as an infringement on a symbol of a sovereign state, having been originally captured by Israel during the 1967 War. Atarot was the first airport constructed in the British Mandate, making it one of the oldest in the Middle East. Upon its capture, it was only used for domestic flights and was closed during the Second Intifada in 2000. There is support, however, for a proposed venture to reestablish Atarot under joint Israeli-Palestinian management, but this is unlikely to occur if plans move forward to establish a nearby Israeli neighborhood.
