In class Tuesday we discussed the location and origin of the term Canaan:
In the bible it corresponds to the Levant, or the eastern portion of the Mediterranean. This is the main setting of the narrative of the Hebrew Bible. The area of Israel, Philistia, and Pheonicia. The “Land of Canaan” mentioned in Genesis 10 of the Hebrew bible extends from Lebanon east toward the Jordan River Valley. The term Canaanites is by far the most frequently used ethnic term in the bible, in which they are described as a people who had been destroyed by the Israelites. The term and idea of Canaan tends to change depending on the time period, location, and text.
