Cartoon of the Arab-Israeli Conflict

By Carlos Latuff, uploaded on his website, deviantART.com

I found this cartoon to be interesting because of the representations of both Israelis and Palestinians and how this serves as a general representation of both communities. The Israeli child is wearing clean, almost new clothes, while the Palestinian boy is in old, ratty looking clothing. Also, the Israeli boy has a modern handgun while the Palestinian boy only has a crude slingshot. This exemplifies the status of both peoples in the area as well; the Israelis are more affluent and modern, while the Palestinians have little and are seen as a poorer, more primitive class.

Also, the fact that the Israeli child is using family biases to justify his outlook on Arabs shows that heritage and generational biases play a role in how many Israelis view the conflict.

In general I thought this was an interesting cartoon because it depicts a lot of stereotypes and biases that have been made over the years and the fact that we have to overcome them in order to get to the root of the problem.
