On Tuesday and Wednesday the Israeli Parliament passed a trio of bills that for the first time require the Ultra-Orthodox Jews of Israel to fight in the military. The decision was made in part to have the growing population of the Ultra-Orthodox do their part by serving in the military and additionally, in attempt to quell the rising popularity of the Palestinian separate state. The Ultra-Orthodox condemn the law and many experts, such as Dana Blander, a researcher at the Israel Democracy Institute, warn that the peace-keeping referendum could backfire. Nevertheless, now male Ultra-Orthodox between the ages of 18 and 21 are eligible to serve in the Israeli military.
