Last Monday, April 17, more than 1,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons joined a hunger strike to demand better conditions. This unusually large protest was led by Marwan Barghouti, a prominent prison and a figure often seen as the future Palestinian leader. There are unconfirmed reports that he had been moved into solitary confinement as a punishment for starting this protest. Protests around the West Bank and Gaza broke out in support of the prisoners. Prisoners demands include more family visits, end to solitary confinement, better health care, and greater access to education within the prisons. Israeli officials have said that they did not negotiation with the prisoners, as the hunger strikes are illegal. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/17/world/middleeast/marwan-barghouti-hunger-strike-israel.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FIsrael&action=click&contentCollection=world®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=collection&_r=0
