As I was studying for our final and researching the geography of the Israeli and Palestinian regions I looked up information on the Negev River. There is a current project going on along the Negev in order to protect the people and build up the community. One quote that I found to be particularly intriguing is: “The communities along the Gaza border have been experiencing the threat of missile fire and mortar shells for years. The IDF suggested an original solution for the local residents’ distress —planting trees to create a green defensive shield. The trees would hide the communities from the view of the rocket launchers and make it difficult for them to hit their targets.” The IDF is an organization which has been focusing on how to build up the “green defensive shield.” It was fascinating to me to discover the ecological projects that are supported in order to better the area and lives along the Negev. The website also talks about a park known as the Ben Gurion Park “an Oasis in the desert.” The name caught my attention since it was named after Israel’s first Prime Minister. The park provides bike paths and opportunities for families to come out and be a part of the community. It has opened the doors to relief in the land.
